Flayed Website gif. 2018

To address the problem of the recurring failure of documentation to adequately convey the reality of a given work of art, a new object was devised to counteract this deadening effect.

A series of obsessive mesh drawings were produced. These skin-like forms—resembling something stripped from an unknown creature—were draped and hung to form a staged installation.

The familiar documentation camera position was adopted, and through time-lapse, the images were animated to bear witness to the event. As the day unfolds, the sun’s progress is tracked as it sweeps incrementally across the space.

These images were then compressed, first by flattening the volume of the space into a crude paper cut-out standing in a virtual space, and further compressing time by processing the images into a stuttering gif. What the visitor to the website encounters is an unmediated object presenting its source and self simultaneously.
